On May 31st, 2025, the race from Melun Andrezel in Section 7 Region Z3 was more than just another flight. It was a spectacle. Against 1,450 pigeons, Team Hooymans NL from Wijk en Aalburg claimed 1st place with an outstanding performance and a top bird clocking an impressive 1,354 meters per minute.
In the world of racing pigeons, it seems that everything is up for debate lately. But sometimes… we cross the line. Just look at the current discussion about races that might be canceled or delayed due to expected weather conditions. Some fanciers now suggest we should move basketing days or change release locations last minute.
Saturday, May 31st, 2025 – a date that won’t be forgotten anytime soon in the Dutch pigeon racing scene. On this bright spring morning, no less than 9,799 pigeons were released at 08:00 AM in Hirson (France) for a challenging 388 km mid-distance flight to the north. With steady weather and a supportive tailwind, conditions were ideal for a fast race — but only one loft could take the crown.
Appingedam, May 31st, 2025 – When the pigeons were released at 8:00 AM from Hirson (France), nobody knew that the race would turn into a showcase of feminine excellence. But by 13:06:22, the message was loud and clear: Wendela Wiersema had done it again. Her leading pigeon rocketed home over 422 kilometers and beat all 1,849 rivals to claim the 1st prize in Afdeling 10 – Vlieggebied 2.
When pigeon racing becomes an art form, the names Ydo & Elco Homma stand tall among the Dutch elite. On the one-day long-distance race from Hirson (±355 km), flown on May 31, 2025, the brothers delivered a result so dominant it left the competition stunned.
On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the pigeons of Section 6 (Netherlands) were released at 7:00 AM from Fontenay sur Eure (France) for a mid-distance race of 508.591 km. With light southwest winds, partly cloudy skies, and a temperature of 12°C, the conditions were favorable — and the competition was fierce.
Last Wednesday, I loaded up a group of pigeons and drove to Steenbergen for a training toss. Everything seemed perfect — blue skies, a light tailwind, and a basket full of eager wings. But when I got back home, I noticed something was off. Three of the birds didn’t return on time. They came back eventually, but much later than expected, and visibly tired.
Now, most fanciers would chalk it up to a tough day and move on. But here at my loft, every pigeon gets the attention it deserves — not just physically, but mentally too. And believe me, that mental side is massively underestimated in the pigeon sport.
