Appingedam, May 31st, 2025 – When the pigeons were released at 8:00 AM from Hirson (France), nobody knew that the race would turn into a showcase of feminine excellence. But by 13:06:22, the message was loud and clear: Wendela Wiersema had done it again. Her leading pigeon rocketed home over 422 kilometers and beat all 1,849 rivals to claim the 1st prize in Afdeling 10 – Vlieggebied 2.
And that was only the beginning. With 36 prizes from just 49 pigeons entered, Wendela delivered a masterclass in pigeon racing – one that left many seasoned men stunned and speechless.
👩🔬 A Scientist with Wings – Meet Wendela Wiersema
At just 28 years old, Wendela is no stranger to success. She grew up in Appingedam and discovered the magic of pigeons at the age of 10, flying in tandem with her younger sister. From there, her story took flight – quite literally.
While many of her competitors were settling into routine, Wendela pursued excellence on all fronts: graduating from VWO, recently completing her degree in Biological and Medical Research, and dominating the pigeon sport with an approach that is equal parts analytical and passionate.
She already holds multiple national titles as a youth competitor, and as an adult, she became National Loft Champion Young Birds in 2017 and 2021. But her ambitions don’t stop with victories. Wendela is also committed to shaping the future of pigeon racing through her role in the Dutch Section for Sport Experience, promoting inclusivity, fairness, and a better experience for fanciers of all ages and genders.

👑 Outperforming the Men – Time and Again
Let’s not tiptoe around it: pigeon racing is still heavily male-dominated. And that makes Wendela’s consistent dominance even more impressive. While many veteran fanciers take pride in decades of experience, Wendela walks in, calculates, prepares... and wins.
“She makes it look easy,” whispered one fancier at the club. But it’s not luck. It’s talent. It’s training. It’s timing. And it’s tireless devotion to her birds.
The results from Hirson are just the latest proof. And they echo a pattern that’s becoming familiar: Wendela doesn’t just keep up with the men – she beats them. Repeatedly. Decisively. Gracefully.
🏆 Top Competitors – But No Match This Time
