The race in numbers
On August 23, 2025, Section 7 sent 3,738 pigeons to Melun Andrezel. At 10:00 AM, the baskets opened and the contest over 415 km was on. Conditions demanded the utmost, but the pigeon of Alex van Zomeren from Tiel stormed home like a rocket. With a velocity of 1,306.809 m/min, it left the entire section in shock. A victory achieved ahead of giants like Hooymans and Bakker — and that makes this performance shine even brighter.

Introducing – The man behind the victory
Alex van Zomeren is not just another fancier. His passion began with his grandfather, with whom he tended the lofts from the age of eight. After a short pause in 1995, Alex restarted in 2000 — and ever since, pigeons have been his daily rhythm. Every morning at 06:00, his birds train above Tiel while Alex stands on watch.
Because of back problems, good friend Cor Hak helps with cleaning the lofts, leaving Alex free to focus on training, care and strategy. His yard houses modern lofts with eight sections: two for widowers, two for widow hens and four for the young team. Each year he breeds around one hundred youngsters and races with 22 cocks and 22 hens on total widowhood.
The bloodlines at his loft are a who’s who of champions: Borgmans Brothers, Koen Van Roy, Van Wanrooij, Maurice van der Kruk, Wout Spierings, Scheele family and Ruud Bakker.
His system and philosophy
Alex races all disciplines except overnight. The old birds are darkened until three weeks before the first one-day long distance race. Pairings are done with care: breeders usually in December (in 2024 even exactly at full moon), flyers in February. For basketing: no showing of partners, no unnecessary stress. Only for the final one-day long distance flight are they allowed to see each other.
When it comes to health, Alex is a believer in natural support only: oregano oil, Probac 1000, brewer’s yeast, Bio Lucetol, Sedochol and Wonder Pigeon. For five years now, not a single medication has been used — not even against tricho. After each race: Belgasol in the water. The result? A loft that performs at the highest level, the natural way.
The top-10 in perspective
The results speak volumes:
-
2. J. Hooymans – a world-famous name, just behind Alex.
-
3 & 7. R.C. Bakker – multiple early arrivals.
-
4 & 5. J. den Hartog & Son – solid and consistent.
-
6. Team de Patagoon and 8. Zorgboer Onze Missie – impressive early birds.
-
9. Bernard van Oerle and 10. Ronald Veenendaal – familiar names delivering again.
Yet no matter who else made the top-10, the undisputed headliner was Alex van Zomeren.
Alex is happy to help! Give him a buzz, if you need just anything...
